Isn't Pet Assure Insurance?

No. Pet Assure is a discount program. You purchase a membership and receive a discount card good for 25% off veterinary services from participating providers. Although it is marketed as an alternative to pet insurance, it can be used in conjunction with a pet insurance policy as well.

Your discount is good for exams, in office procedures, surgeries, hospitalization as well as routine care like vaccinations and dental cleanings.

The program also has agreements with some retailers that will give you discounts (though not necessarily 25%) on pet supplies and services like boarding, grooming, food and pharmaceuticals.

In addition to the discount program, Pet Assure's membership includes a lost pet recovery program. Each enrolled pet is given an ID tag to be placed on its collar. If someone finds your pet, they need only make one phone call to a toll free number that is answered 24/7. Pet Assure takes it from there--locating you and reuniting you with your pet.

What is Not Covered?

In general, anything you purchase at the vet's office for use at home like medication or prescription diet food will not be discounted. The same is true for some lab work, grooming and boarding that is not part of your pet's treatment. However, you may be able to realize a discount on some of these through the retailer discount program.

And, of course, any veterinary services that you receive from a vet or clinic that is not part of the network of participating providers will not be eligible for a discount. Pet Assure's website has a provider locator search. So, you will be able to determine whether there are veterinarians in your area where you can use the discount card.

If your vet isn't part of the network, you can submit their name and contact information and Pet Assure will contact them about becoming a provider. But, it will be up to your vet whether or not to join the network and honor the discount.

Can I Use This If I Have Insurance?

Yes. And, depending on your situation, it might be a good idea. If you don't have wellness coverage, you can at least get a discount on some of those services your insurance doesn't cover.

What's more, if your pet insurance policy reimburses you based on the vet's bill and there's a maxium per incident, annual or lifetime payout, using your discount for covered services could help conserve your coverage limit.

The Bottom Line

This program has a lot to recommend it. It's worthwhile to consider whether it's right for your situation. The cost is reasonable and is based on the type and number of pets.

Membership is typcially $6.00 per month for a cat or small pet. Dogs, horses and other large pets are around $10.00 per month. A household of four pets can be covered for about $14.00. There is a price break if you pay annually.

Any pet can be enrolled regardless of species, age or pre-existing conditions. There's no waiting period and no claim forms. You receive your discount at the time of service simply by showing your card.
